A detailed analysis of the near-field enhancement of a tip under laser irradiation is presented. The simulations were carried out using the HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) software. These simulations were done with different materials assigned to the tip at different frequencies of the laser beam. The dependence of the optical field enhancement on the wavelength of the laser beam, material properties of the tip, shape of the tip and tip aspect-ratio is illustrated. It has been found that the enhancement of the field is inversely proportional to both frequency of the laser beam and the radius of the tip. An experimental effort was also carried out in the preparation of the tungsten tips using electrochemical etching. The dependence of the aspect ratio of the tip on the length of the tungsten wire in the electrolyte, total length of the wire, concentration of the electrolyte will also be reported in detail.
