Multi-Scale Simulations of the Mechanics of Transport and Growth in Soft Tissue

Harish Narayan, Krishna Garikipati, Ellen M Arruda, Karl Grosh, and Sarah Calve. University of Michigan, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2250 GG Brown, Ann Arbor, MI 48109

A continuum treatment for growth of tissue is formulated. The treatment is consistent with mixture theory. The coupling of mass transport and mechanics that emerges from the thermodynamics is highlighted. Finite element simulations of growth at the continuum level demonstrate some aspects of the coupled formulation. Lattice Boltzmann calculations of transport at the microscale are also discussed in the context of soft tissue mechanics.
