Calculation of Forces on Dislocations in Anisotropic Strips and Film-Substrate Systems

Mao S. Wu and Huyi Wang. Nanyang Technological University, 50 Nanyang Avenue, Singapore, 639798, Singapore

A dislocation in a strip or a film-substrate experiences image forces due to the interfaces between dissimilar media, i.e., free surfaces and interface boundaries. In this investigation, the method of continuously image dislocations is used to derive elastic solutions for a discrete edge dislocation in an anisotropic strip or a film-substrate. The elastic field of the image dislocations is used to calculate the image forces acting on the dislocation according to the Peach-Koehler formula. The interactive force on a dislocation in the presence of multiple dislocations is also calculated with due consideration given to the image forces. The numerical results for both ceramic and metallic systems show that the forces acting on a dislocation are influenced by the complex interplay between elastic anisotropy/material inhomogeneity and the interface boundary conditions.
