Getting into a spin over objectivity

A. Ian Murdoch, University of Strathclyde, University of Strathclyde, Livingstone Tower, 26 Richmond Street, Glasgow, G1 1XH, United Kingdom

The controversy over the correct interpretation of material frame-indifference will be outlined. The manner in which standard restrictions upon response functions can be obtained using only simple assumptions concerning observer agreement will be presented. In particular such restrictions will be shown to involve only proper orthogonal tensors, and not to require that all observers should employ the same response functons.
