The paper describes linear and non-linear electrooptic (EO) effects and applications of EO materials in planar lightwave circuits (PLC). Common EO materials, such as, LNO, LTO, PLZT and polymers, have been used in a variety of optical components. Recently, we have used EO materials and developed a few novel optical components, such as tunable micro lenses, variable optical attenuators, hybrid and monolithic optical switches. Measurement and numerical analysis results are presented to demonstrate the performance of these electrooptic devices.
