Surface Acoustic Solitons in Elastic Half-Space Coated with Piezoelectric Film

Xiang-Fa Wu and Yuris A. Dzenis

Nonlinear surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation in an elastic half-space coated with a piezoelectric film was studied. During the procedure, the piezoelectric coating system was assumed consisting of a linearly elastic half-space coated with a thin piezoelectric film with nonlinear constitutive law. A nonlinear evolution equation was derived that leads to the celebrated Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the asymptotic sense. The corresponding soliton solution was caught, and the conditions for the nonlinear SAWs without energy leakage were discussed. The obtained results can be used as the theoretical basis for determining the material properties of piezoelectric coating films based on strongly pulsed surface perturbations such as pulsed laser excitation etc.
